From Marcy to Barclays (not Madison Square) will probably be the new slogan for Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter. His rise from the toughest housing projects, to hustling to make ends meet as a teenager, to taking over the rap game on his own terms, to expanding into one of the most powerful businessmen in the nation, to part ownership of an NBA franchise and being instrumental in the logo, uniform style and marketing campaign of the team that will play in your old stomping grounds of Brooklyn. Jay-Z is proud of where he is from so it was no surprise that the underground classic (Where I’m From) was the first song Jigga performed during the first performance at the new Barclays Center.

One night after the grand opening of the new 40/40 restaurant inside the Barclays, Jay-Z christened the stadium stage first with a series of concerts to follow. The only guest to appear was Big Daddy Kane, a Brooklyn native. Kane, at the height of his success, once brought out a young Jay-Z to rock a capacity crowd. Check out how the rest of a monumental night in BK went down here.
