A Florida high school hero who wrestled a loaded gun away from a football player threatening to shoot a teammate was suspended for three days. WTH!
The 16-year-old, from Cypress Lake High School in Fort Myers, was punished for his part in disarming the boy who wanted to blast another student on the school bus ride home.
Witnesses said the suspect was aiming the .22 caliber revolver “point blank” at a student and saying he was going to shoot. But, instead of rewarding the heroic teen who put his own life at risk, school authorities suspended him “for his role in an incident where a weapon was present”.
The boy, who has not been publically identified, said there was “no doubt” he saved the target’s life with his actions. The teen’s mother believes her son should be commended, not suspended. “It’s dumb. How they going to suspend me for doing the right thing?” he said.
The boy’s mother said if her son hadn’t acted quickly, “I think there would have been a lot of fatalities.” Lee County Sheriff’s Office’s Sergeant David Valez said an investigation was ongoing.
The suspect has been charged with possession of a firearm on school property. He was also charged with assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.
School district spokesman Alberto Rodriguez refused to comment in detail on the incident., only saying “Florida law allows the principal to suspend a student immediately pending a hearing.”
