Two Boston men are facing assault charges for beating up a homeless Hispanic man and citing Donald Trump’s stance on immigration as inspiration.
According to The Boston Globe, a 58-year-old man was severely beaten by Steve and Scott Leader. The brothers were arrested on Wednesday after witnesses saw them approach the man at the Dorchester MBTA stop. After awakening the man by urinating on him, the brothers punched him in the face and hit him with a metal pole.
The Leader brothers told police they were attacked by the man, but witnesses refuted their account.
The Boston Globe reports:
Witnesses told police they saw the men attack the homeless man. One woman said she saw him hunched over and clutching the pole, apparently to defend himself, according to the report. She told police one of the suspects grabbed the pole and struck him three or four times, including in the head.
After they were arrested, one of the brothers told police they were inspired by GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump, who has made disparaging remarks about immigrants in recent months.
“Donald Trump was right, all these illegals need to be deported,” he allegedly told the police.
The man was taken to Boston Medical Center, where he is listed in fair condition. His injuries include a broken nose, bruises on his head, and a battered torso.
Scott Leader was convicted of a hate crime and imprisoned for one year after attacking a Moroccan man in Boston days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, according to court records. Leader threw a cup at the man, who was working at a Dunkin’ Donuts, calling him “terrorist” and several ethnic slurs.
During a news conference late Wednesday, the presidential nominee was asked about the incident and instead of passionately condemning the action, he called his alleged supporters “passionate.”
The New York Times reports:
“It would be a shame,” Mr. Trump said, before adding: “I will say that people who are following me are very passionate. They love this country and they want this country to be great again. They are passionate.”
The Leader brothers are currently being held without bail.
Trump’s supporters have invited scrutiny in the past. Fox News host Megyn Kelly was forced to take a week vacation and beefed up security after she was sent death threats for criticizing Trump while hosting the first Republican presidential debate.
