Cleveland what up, my name is Matty Willz and I was born and raised right here in Cleveland, Ohio. I’m a ridiculous sports fan, I love hip hop to death and my interest is always piqued when the sports and music worlds collide. With all that said – I’m getting a little tired of the internet thugs and their bashing of our point guard Kyrie Irving.
The entire premise of the story from the standpoint as a fan of the Cleveland Cavaliers is inconsequential. As an avid watcher of the NBA I couldn’t careless who’s dating who – just show me the highlights and the replays and we’re good. However, when I heard that Kyrie was dating an R&B chick named Kehlani I did a little digging. The 20-year-old singer/song writer is very early in her career having just signed to Atlantic Records in 2015. She was featured on the talent-search show America’s Got Talent in 2011 with her band Poplyfe before opting to embark on her solo journey. She has two projects out and so far has peaked at 36 with the Billboard 200 in May of 2015.
So in short – Kehlani is just now making some waves in the music industry and in this social media age of fads and hashtags I wouldn’t put it past a young lady in her position to ‘stunt for the Gram’ in order to increase her brand recognition. (Well I guess that wasn’t very short, but you get my point.) How many more people know who Kehlani is today that last week at this time couldn’t pick her out of a lineup? Thousands? Millions?
More importantly – why is Kyrie being dragged through the mud on this? What exactly did he do wrong?
The only reason I could see for people to genuinely be upset with Ky’ is that the young lad fell in love with a THOT, and even then that type of stuff has happened to the best of us. So Uncle Drew got a little sappy with his IG back on Valentine’s Day, so what!? Are you going to sit up here and act like you never scroll through your social media and see pics of your ex and don’t cringe? I don’t buy it.
So when I woke up and heard that Irving finally had something to say about this entire situation I was anxious as to what approach the NBA All Star would take. Would he throw her under the bus or would he take the high road?
Kyrie tweeted (then deleted):
Nothing but love and compassion over this way for her and her family. My only focus the Game I love to play every night. It’s unfortunate that it’s received so much attention but its become bigger because of a post that was misunderstood. Of this non sense that could have been avoided, but Me and Kehlani were not dating when the picture came out.
Bang.
First of all, the way he embraced the subject without being disrespectful: “Nothing but love and compassion over this way for her and her family.” Spot on.
It’s been hard to see what’s been going on and not address the truth. I do not justify the picture or what dude did to try and spark all.
Bang, bang.
Not saying Party Next Door’s name was classic. Think of all the rappers that fired at Jay Z back in his day that Jigga refused to acknowledge.
At the end of the day Irving’s job is to help lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to a championship. With his big brother LeBron James making enough headlines it’s incumbent of the other All Stars on the team to lay low, show up to work everyday and concentrate on that task. Leave the sideshows to the folks who need headlines to sell records.
So in closing, if you’re a fan of Cleveland sports then let’s not add fuel to this fire. We got some really big rings to go get.
And if you’re a hater, well, keep doing your thing. Our point guard just showed the world he won’t stoop to your level, probably because it’s always crowded at the bottom.
