From the outside looking in celebrity couple Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade have the perfect relationship.
But when Wade stopped by “Jay Leno” on Friday, he revealed that things were in fact so rocky at one point that they had to “step back.”
“A celebrity relationship is very hard,” said Wade after gushing over his two sons. “This was a big year for us in our relationship from the standpoint of she was shooting her show Being Mary Jane… I was dealing with my injuries, trying to win a championship.”
The Miami Heat star said they needed to take time to really think about the relationship before moving forward. “We kind of took a step back,” he said. “We supported each other, but we took a step back for a little while. At the end of [the] day, we came back together and said, ‘Listen, we want to continue this. We want to try to continue to get better each day.’ She’s been with me and I’ve been with her all summer long. We’re going strong now.”
Over the weekend, the two were spotted frolicking on the beach in Malibu, California. Upcoming, the couple will be pretty busy with Union’s new show “Being Mary Jane” making its debut on BET in January and “Think Like a Man Too” in theaters in the Spring. Then Wade will begin the new 2013-2014 NBA season at the end of October.
